In March 2013, U.S. light-vehicle sales totaled 1.45 million units, up roughly 3% year over year; first-quarter sales reached 3.69 million units, a 6% increase compared with the same period in 2012.
According to data from Autodata, U.S. light-vehicle sales totaled 1,453,038 units in March, up 3.4% from 1,404,699 units in March 2012—marking the highest monthly sales figure since the peak of 1.48 million units in August 2007. In the first quarter, cumulative U.S. light-vehicle sales reached 3,689,089 units, compared with 3,467,609 units in the same period of 2012, a year-over-year increase of 6.4%. Although the growth rate has moderated from the double-digit percentages seen in many months of 2012, March typically serves as a month with a relatively high comparison base.
In March, U.S. passenger car sales declined slightly by 1% year over year to 759,172 units, while light truck sales (including SUVs and pickup trucks) rose 9% year over year to 693,866 units.
Based on the monthly sales rate, the seasonally adjusted annualized sales rate (SAAR) is projected at 15.25 million vehicles. This marks the fifth consecutive month since 2008 in which the U.S. auto market has posted an SAAR exceeding 15 million units. In November 2012, the figure stood at 15.56 million; in December, it was 15.38 million; in January 2013, 15.30 million; and in February, 15.36 million.
